Since pandemic, we no longer receive our parcels at our unit. Now, I have an extra reason to get some sun, and add a few steps to my day.
Today, I went down to pick up my last parcel for the day. It arrived late, and I only have until 7PM to pick it up at the delivery kiosk. Meanwhile, I was trying to catch a deadline, so I was in a hurry. As I walked towards the kiosk, I spotted a garden snail in the middle of the pavement. I had to stop.
It was close to 7PM and foot traffic in the area was higher than normal. This snail was big, about 4 inches of shell and about 5.5 inches of the slimy part of the body. I was scared it would be crushed if unseen. He was trying to cross the payment over to the other side that had soil.
Looking around, I saw a flat dried leaf that already turned brown. I duck-squatted to pick it up, not leaving too far from where the snail is. Thinking that a leaf is still a leaf, I shoved it close to the snail because I was intending to pick it up and help it cross. Take note that prying a snail from the ground is dangerous since it will make it go to shock.
I was going to wait for it to climb onto the leaf so I can move it to the other side; however, as soon as the leaf touched its body, it retreated back to its shell. I was worried I had upset it. I realized, I didn’t ask for permission--so I did what I do best. I talked to it.
Telepathically, I showed him my intention was for him to climb over that dried leaf and I will move him over to his intended destination. I was afraid he wouldn’t respond to me, but I was surprised that it took him only a fraction of a second to respond. He immediately went out of his shell and climbed over the leaf! To add a bit of context here, when I do this for dogs/cats, they usually factor in their own decision making and would decide if they agree or not--so, with my cats, it will take about 10 to 15 seconds before they agree to my telepathic suggestion. But this snail agreed to me in less than a second!
So, the snail climbed over the leaf. I waited until most of its body was on the leaf itself. However, due to its big size, the leaf was too small for him. Some parts of his tail was still gripping the floor and I couldn’t move him. He was still inching his way on the leaf, but there was no way I can lift him.
The kiosk was about to close and I couldn’t bear leaving him like that. I left both my slippers beside him so that no one would step on him. 🤭 I ran barefoot to the kiosk and got my parcel. I came back to him and saw him getting familiar with my slippers. 🙂↕️
So, again, I communicated with him that because we are in this predicament, I told him it is best for him to turn around and go back to the soil he emerged from earlier. And again, he conceded. 🫡 He turned around and I watched him go back to the patch of soil he came from.
From this encounter, I picked up the feeling that in their senses, a dead leaf is nothing more but an object. They know that it is lifeless. This was why he was hesitant to come to it at the beginning. As he was grateful that I saved him from that possibility of getting crushed, I was also grateful, because in fact, even as I did not verbalize the need to “hurry”, I knew he picked up on my urgency and that’s why he made the best possible decision at this time. 🫶
If you find a snail 🐌 in the future, and want to pick it up, lay down a large leaf (not dried) and you can help it cross to a safe patch of soil where it can thrive. Garden snails are pollinators, and they maintain the ecosystem of soils.
