This is the story of Markus.

This cat was a stray at our community condo area. I first saw him in December 2023. I instantly liked him because he was nice. I liked that he would make eye contact every time I would visit him.

Soon, I noticed him losing weight and he was drooling. I would frequently visit him to give him dinners daily. When he finally told me his name, we bonded even more. I started to feel unsettled that he was out there and could be in danger anytime.

We decided to rescue him, and so, I communicated with him first.

Me: Hi Markus, I'm coming to get you soon and you will come live with us. Do you want that?
Markus: Okay, but why?
Me: I want to bring you home with us, so you'll be part of the family.
Markus: Why?
Me: I will be able to care for you better when you are with us. I want you to feel happy and safe and grow with us. So, I'm going to get you tomorrow and bring you to the vet for immediate medical attention.
Markus: Okay, but I'm not sick. I just can't breathe.

He was taken to the vet and was confined for 8 days. He has chronic kidney disease and lost a lot of weight. He's got respiratory issues and couldn't breathe. In about two weeks in, after he was able to come home with us, I decided to communicate with him again.

Me: The guy who usually looked after the community cats said you were 6 years old. Is that accurate?
Markus: I'm 9 years old.
Me: How old were you when you got lost here?
Markus: I was about 3 years old. I had a family before. They dumped me.
Me: *I was already crying at this point* Why did they dump you?
Markus: They didn't like me. They were growing a family and I wasn't welcome anymore.
Me: How did you survive when you were still young at that time?
Markus: I thought it was a new beginning for me. I was free. I was excited to start a new life because in there I got hurt.
Me: *It was heartbreaking to hear how optimistic he was even after being dumped. He was making me feel that he was hurt where he lived before* How did you end up here in the condo area?
Markus: I don't know. I followed some other cats.
Me: How did you find your life as a stray?
Markus: I didn't know life would be so difficult outside. It was really hard.
Me: Are you happy here (at home)? Do you like it here with us?
Markus: Yes, very very much. This is a reunion of souls. I am happy you came for me.

I never had the courage to ask him if he was physically abused. I did notice though that he is a very sensitive soul. He avoids the soft places like the sofa, the bed, etc. From what I gather, he got hit each time he sat on any of those.

Fast forward to this day, he is now able to play with Tomie & Schwinn and is able to build bonds with each of us at home.
